New York City is home to over 100 museums, displaying some of the world’s greatest art.

Maybe you don’t think of yourself as an art expert, but enjoying masterpieces you’ve only seen in textbooks–or being surprised by totally unfamiliar artworks–can be a great thing to do in the city. That said, check out these five incredible NYC museums that you can visit for free.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has the city’s highest suggested admission rate at $30 for adults. However, if you buy your ticket at the museum you are free to pay whatever you want, whether that’s a penny or $50. Your ticket includes same day admission to the Met Bruer and the Met Cloisters. The Met has endless displays that you could spend day after day enjoying. Whether you’re interested in European art or Egyptian tombs, the Met is certainly worth the visit.

The Museum of Modern Art is a New York City highlight, with works by Van Gogh, Monet, and other famous Impressionists on display. Don’t miss taking in some of the world’s most famous impressionist pieces at this great museum. Admission is totally free here on Friday nights from 4-8pm.

The Brooklyn Museum is the city’s third largest museum. Located near Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, this museum is worth the trek into Brooklyn for Egpytian, Asian, and Feminist art, as well a sculpture garden. Admission is a “suggested” fee so if you pay even a few cents, you can visit this great spot. Plus, the nearby Brooklyn Botanic Gardens are free to visit on Saturdays from 10am-12pm.

The Museum of Chinese in America is a lesser known museum that tells the story of Chinese immigrants in America. With exhibits that explore Chinese identity and history in America, this is a high quality museum worth your time. Admission is free every first Thursday of the month, from 11am-9pm.

The Frick Collection is home to European and Renaissance Art, including pieces by Rembrandt. In a Gilded Age Mansion on the Upper East Side, the Frick Collection is a world-renowned art collection you won’t want to miss taking advantage of. On Sundays from 11am-1pm admission is “pay what you wish” and on the first Friday of each month admission is free.
